WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 14, 2011)The following statement is attributed to Jay West, senior director for Chemical Products and Technology at the American Chemistry Council (ACC):

“The Nanotechnology Panel of ACC supports and promotes the safe use and manufacture of the products of nanotechnology. The panel believes that federal agencies have a critical role to play in supporting the responsible development and use of nanotechnology. They are also making essential contributions through environment, health, and safety research and related initiatives.

“ACC's Nanotechnology Panel continues to support the National Nanotechnology Initiative’s (NNI) role of coordinating federal agency efforts to advance research, commercialization, education, and responsible development of nanotechnology. The federal government must continue to act as a facilitator so our domestic market can capitalize on the societal and economic potential of nanotechnology.

“Nanotechnology is an enabling science. Innovations in nanotechnology are already improving our society in areas such as health care, energy efficiency, environmental remediation, and even national security. Fostering a strong nanotechnology sector can further help the U.S. economy by creating well-paying jobs rooted in manufacturing and innovation. The NNI is an important piece of the federal structure to facilitate the growth of the nanotechnology industry right here in the U.S.”
