WASHINGTON (February 3, 2021) – The American Chemistry Council (ACC) today announced Dow Chairman and CEO Jim Fitterling as its 2021 chairman of its board of directors. Fitterling officially begins his tenure by presiding over tomorrow’s first board meeting of the year for the association.

“Advancing the understanding, value, and need for science- and risk-based decision-making in both the marketplace and public policy is central to our mission at ACC,” said ACC President and CEO Chris Jahn. “As Chairman and CEO of a company that produces some of the most advanced and innovative products contributing to sustainability in major market sectors that touch the lives of Americans every day, such as automotive and transportation; building and construction; consumer goods; appliances, and packaging, Jim Fitterling understands the importance of policies that support economic growth while protecting public health and the environment and creating a more sustainable and prosperous future for our people and planet,” Jahn added. “His experience, leadership, and steady hand will help to ensure ACC’s continued success as we promote the role of American chemistry in a global manufacturing future.”

“It is a privilege to serve in this capacity during such a pivotal time,” said Fitterling. “The chemical industry has a unique and critical role in solving some of the greatest problems facing our world, including a global health crisis, economic and societal challenges, and climate change. At the same time, our opportunity and our responsibility to unite and collaborate across businesses, government, and society to drive transformative change and lasting solutions has never been greater.”

Prior to his role as ACC chairman, Fitterling served as Chairman of the Executive Committee, preceded by his role as Vice Chairman of the Board and Chair of the Council’s Board Finance, Audit and Membership Committee. Fitterling joined ACC’s board of directors in 2018. He currently co-chairs ACC’s Board Sustainability Committee.

Fitterling also serves as the Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Manufacturers and is on the Board of Directors for the U.S.-China Business Council and Business Roundtable. In addition, he is a member of the CEO Climate Dialogue and the Dean’s Engineering Advisory Council for the University of Missouri’s College of Engineering.

“Finding common ground on the policy solutions needed to help solve the world’s most pressing challenges has never been more imperative. From chemistry’s unique role in defeating COVID-19, to combating climate change, to improving sustainability and protecting the health and safety of people worldwide, the stakes could not be higher, nor Jim’s leadership more timely,” added Jahn.
