EPA Workshop Evaluating All Data Should Inform EPA Revision of Formaldehyde IRIS Assessment


An open, transparent dialogue among experts on formaldehyde science is vital
for an improved assessment that considers all available evidence

WASHINGTON (April 28, 2014) – In advance of the upcoming workshop on formaldehyde hosted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (April 30-May 1), the Formaldehyde Panel of the American Chemistry Council released the following statement urging EPA to address the critical unresolved questions surrounding formaldehyde and its potential association with leukemia:

"We look forward to a robust discussion at the upcoming EPA workshop on formaldehyde and encourage the broader scientific community to attend and weigh the arguments. This workshop provides an opportunity for the world"s leading scientists on formaldehyde to come together, review and discuss all available data, including newly-released research, and provide EPA with meaningful outcomes that can inform the revised formaldehyde IRIS assessment.  In its 2010 report on the formaldehyde IRIS assessment, the National Academy of Sciences made clear its concerns about the lack of a causal framework for leukemia given the ‘inconsistencies in the epidemiologic data, the weak animal data, and the lack of mechanistic data."

"An open and transparent dialogue – followed by a full public record of the workshop – will demonstrate that EPA is taking steps to achieve the directive laid out in Chapter 7 of the National Academy of Sciences report on the prior formaldehyde IRIS assessment, which made clear that ‘strengthened, more integrative and more transparent discussions of weight of the evidence are needed."

"The formaldehyde industry is committed to working with EPA to ensure the revised IRIS assessment of formaldehyde is based on a thorough and objective evaluation of the available scientific information using a systematic review of the weight of evidence."
