Foam Sheathing Makers Hail New National Standard Requirements a Win for Builders and Consumers

WASHINGTON, D.C. (October 26, 2012) – The Foam Sheathing Committee of the American Chemistry Council is pleased to announce that the American National Standards Institute has approved the Structural Building Components Association’s (SBCA) FS 100-2012: Standard Requirements for Wind Pressure Resistance and Foam Plastic Insulating Sheathing Used in Exterior Wall Covering Assemblies. The new standard establishes wind pressure resistance requirements for foam plastic insulating sheathing (FPIS) products, including for use as continuous insulation in exterior wall covering assemblies for the purpose of demonstrating wind pressure performance. The standard covers performance testing, analysis and quality control procedures.

This technical standard is important for designers, builders and, ultimately, consumers in establishing applied wind load resistance and quality control requirements that substantiate full code compliance for FPIS products. 

The development committee included Jay Crandell, P.E., technical consultant for the American Chemistry Council’s Foam Sheathing Committee (FSC), and Brian Lieburn of Dow Building Solutions, FS 100 Project Committee Chair and also a member of FSC’s Technical Advisory Committee. This standard is reflective of FSC’s mission to develop solutions to building code issues and promote the proper technical use of foam sheathing in the construction industry.

Lieburn applauded the work of the FS 100 Project Committee, saying, “I’m pleased the project committee was able to develop a strong and meaningful standard that provides excellent guidance to manufacturers, builders and code officials to ensure the proper use of foam plastic insulated sheathing. It was an honor to Chair this committee of leading technical experts in the United States and Canada.”
