Helmet Spoken Here

Standard*: G.4.1:Identify the technology used by someone employed in a job or position in Wisconsin and explain how the technology works.

Objective: Students will be able to identify the specific occupations/leisure activities in which helmets are worn.

Materials: Paper, pencils, large chart paper, and word search.

Activity: Students will individually list as many occupations/leisure activities where helmets are worn*. Then students will share their lists to make a class list on chart paper. Students will then complete a helmet occupation/leisure word search. Finally, students will pick any 3-5 different occupations and explain in writing what purpose they think the helmet serves. Students will orally share these thoughts with the class.

Assessment: By the end of the unit, students will be able to identify 8-10 occupation or leisure activities in which helmets are worn. They will also be able to identify between 3-5 different features of various helmets and the protection it provides.

*Possible occupations/leisure activities students will identify independently or locate on word search may include:

firefighter, riot police, construction worker, road repair, roofers, miners, astronauts, telephone repair technician, electric co, repair technicians, cable installers, crane operators, architect, well drillers, forestry workers, soldiers/military, factory workers, welders, motorcycle riders, bicycle riders, ATV riders, skate boarders, roller bladers, baseball players, football players, hockey players, racecar drivers, snowmobilers, horseback riders, snow boarders, etc.
