When I Grow Up (Part 1)
Standards*: A.4.1: Use effective reading strategies to achieve their purposes in reading.
B.4.1: Create or produce writing to communicate with different audiences for a variety of purposes.
C.4.3: Participate effectively in discussion.
Objective: Students will be able to understand the educational steps necessary in planning for various careers with an emphasis on careers that require safety helmets.
Materials: Resource list of careers that utilize a helmet for safety, paper, pencils, and chart paper.
Activity: Upon completing the “Helmet Spoken Here” activity students will work in pairs to write what they see as the pros/cons of 5 safety helmet occupations. Students will share their thoughts through class discussion. Students and teacher will then try to verify their findings with resource materials including the internet, personal/family experience, and interviews with various people involved in those careers.
Assessment: Students will be able to identify 3-5 reasons why or why not they might be interested in any 2 of the helmet occupations.
Resources: Individuals involved in safety helmet occupations.
Informational texts, videos, and the internet.
Possible field trips to job sites based on availability, safety, and funding.
