The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency launched its Voluntary Children's Chemical Evaluation Program (VCCEP) pilot in December 2000. EPA chose candidate chemicals for this program on the basis of their presence in biomonitoring databases and environmental databases relevant to children. The chemicals selected for this pilot do not necessarily pose a risk to children, rather they are products of a selection process based on the available data. Thirty-four chemical companies are participating in this EPA pilot program to assess chemicals for their potential effects on children. Members of the American Chemistry Council as well as other industry groups and some individual companies have volunteered 20 of the program's 23 chemicals to date.
