David W.
Biomass to Liquids Program Manager

W. R. Grace & Co.

Describe what you do at work daily?
I seek out and develop new technologies and opportunities for Grace in the broad area of Biomass to Liquids. Biomass is a growing and important field in today’s world as renewable biomass sources reduce our carbon footprint.

What do you believe has been your most essential contribution to the chemistry industry – why are you essential?
At the University of Waterloo, I was part of the chemistry magic show for the public. I believe we showed people the interesting and fun side of chemistry.

When and how did you realize that you wanted to pursue a career in the chemistry industry?
I had a chemistry set as a young lad. I enjoyed the experiments that came with the set as well as devising my own with various household materials. In high school, I had a series of very dynamic science teachers. They kept it interesting.

What do you believe makes the chemistry industry essential?
Chemistry is present in every aspect of our lives. Consider that there is food chemistry, materials chemistry, biochemistry, energy related chemistry, petroleum chemistry, etc. The list goes on and on.

What do you consider to be the most important innovation in the 21st Century?
Internet and faster computing allows the faster development of technology and sharing of information around the world.

Who do you believe is the most influential figure in science and why?
The many high school science teachers around the world. It is their attitude and teaching that determines how many students will become scientists. These new scientists will discover cheaper, cleaner energy and medicines to cure diseases that are now crippling or fatal.

If you were not employed in the chemistry industry, what would be your dream job?
To be a fly-fishing guide in a remote location. I enjoy the outdoors and working with people and teaching. This would combine a few of my favorite things. To complete the dream, I would have to convince my family to join me.

If you could travel to any city in the world where would you go and why?
A city near the Great Wall of China to be able to go see the Wall. I am astounded by the engineering and labor that went into its construction.
