ACC Statement on Senate Confirmation Hearing for Steven Chu as U.S. Secretary of Energy

ARLINGTON, VA (January 13, 2009) – Today Dr. Steven Chu appeared before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee for a confirmation hearing on his nomination as the next U.S. Secretary of Energy.

American Chemistry Council (ACC) President & CEO Cal Dooley issued the following statement:

“At a time when technology and innovation are poised to be key drivers of our nation’s energy advancement and economic recovery, the selection of a Nobel-prize winning physicist and leading research director is an exciting one indeed.  ACC shares Dr. Chu’s commitment to principles such as energy efficiency and conservation, development of alternative and renewable energy, and energy security and diversity, including nuclear power. Such approaches will be vital to fulfilling growing global energy demand and adding ‘green jobs’ while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We congratulate Dr. Chu on this well-deserved nomination.

“We look forward to working with Dr. Chu and others in the Obama Administration to develop a comprehensive national energy plan. We are hopeful that the next generation of U.S. energy policy creates new jobs while preserving the green, clean energy jobs in the United States today – many of them in the business of chemistry.  We are one of the largest private-sector funders of research and development, spending $27 billion annually in ways that add value to the economy and further clean energy goals. Our products go into some of the most relied-upon materials for energy efficiency – from solar panels and wind turbines to building insulation, compact fluorescent light bulbs and many others.”
