ACC Supports Concerted And Balanced Approach To Chemical Safety And Security
ARLINGTON, VA (April 21, 2009) – Today, the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigation held a hearing to examine the August, 2008 incident at the BayerCropScience facility in Institute, West Virginia.
American Chemistry Council President & CEO Cal Dooley issued the following statement:
“The circumstances that led to today’s hearing are tragic and we respect the concerns raised by Chairmen Waxman and Stupak and the Committee regarding two issues that are of critical importance to our members – safety and security.
“We will work with officials at all levels of government to ensure that the goals of safety and security do not conflict with each other and that our members are provided clear direction in meeting their obligations to both. We believe this can be accomplished by establishing the appropriate balance between our responsibility to share information that ensures safety while meeting our obligations to protect our employees and surrounding communities.
“ACC and its members remain committed to working with government officials to enhance safety and security at our facilities so we can provide the essential benefits of chemistry to society. In addition to meeting the goals set by current regulations affecting safety and security, our members will continue to go beyond those requirements under ACC’s Responsible Care® program.”
