Though the business of chemistry is worldwide in scope, the bulk of the world’s $3.7 trillion chemical output is accounted for by only a handful of industrialized nations. The United States alone produced $689 billion, 18.6 percent of the total world chemical output in 2008.
trade
The increase in world chemical production has brought with it an even larger increase in international chemical trade. Chemicals are now manufactured in many production locations around the globe, and prices for chemicals are generally set by global supply and demand. The international trade of chemicals reflects an intensely competitive struggle for markets by the producers in an increasingly global industry.
energy
The business of chemistry is energy-intensive. This is especially the case for basic chemicals as well as certain specialty chemical segments (e.g., industrial gases). It relies upon energy inputs not only for fuel and power for its operations, but also as raw materials in the manufacture of many of its products. For example, oil and natural gas are raw materials (termed “feedstocks”) for the manufacture of organic chemicals.
