The chemical sector has a long history of working with the government to improve its knowledge and understanding of the vital role chemical companies play in society, the environment and the economy. The Cyber Security Program's government relations initiative builds on the industry's history of effective partnership with the government.
Since its beginning, the Cyber Security Program has realized the importance of having a close working relationship with government agencies. Through its Steering team and Risk Assessment and Preparedness team, Cyber Security Program members participated in the regulatory process, providing comments on the Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS) Advance Notice of Rulemaking and offering perspectives about the risk-based performance standards created by regulators. A number of other projects - including the participation of 14 chemical companies in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)-sponsored Cyber Storm II exercise - provide several opportunities for chemical companies to interact with DHS officials.
A continued emphasis on increasing interactions with DHS will help ensure that chemical sector cyber security efforts are aligned with government priorities so that together, we can make good strategic decisions and benefit from each other's initiatives. It will also draw us closer to the Cyber Security Program's ultimate goal – a safe and more secure cyberspace.
