Healthy 2009 Pool Season
ACC’s Chlorine Chemistry Division is partnering with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Water Quality and Health Council to help launch a healthy 2009 pool season.

Chlorine Bleach Kills Swine Flu Virus
As the World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention track the progress of the swine influenza A (H1N1) virus around the globe, the public should be aware of a time-tested ally in the war against germs—chlorine bleach. See the Water Quality and Health Council's checklist for a pandemic flu outbreak.

From providing one of the most basic human needs—clean drinking water—to contributing to the production of high-tech first-responder equipment, sustainable building materials, food protection chemicals, computer microprocessor chips and more than 90 percent of prescription pharmaceuticals, chlorine chemistry is essential to everyday life in America.

Among its many uses, chlorine chemistry is  instrumental in producing high-purity silicon which is needed to make the tiny integrated circuit “chips” that are at the heart of modern electronics. Solar panels, which generate greenhouse gas-free electricity directly from sunlight, are also made using high-purity silicon. And fiber optic cable, also manufactured with high-purity silicon, is currently in great demand as the communications industry competes to deliver integrated voice, data and Internet services to consumers.

The Chlorine Chemistry Division of the American Chemistry Council represents major producers and users of chlorine in the United States. Chlorine chemistry contributes more than $46 billion to the U.S. economy each year through sales of chlorine and other building block chemicals. The innovative products of chlorine chemistry help keep us healthy and safe; reduce our energy consumption; facilitate renewable energy; enable electronic and fiber optic communications and much more.

This website highlights the benefits of chlorine chemistry and offers consumer tips for using some common chlorinated products. It also presents information on chlorine chemistry health and environmental issues.
