Classroom Activities

Following is a list of educational resources developed by the Chlorine Chemistry Division of the American Chemistry Council (ACC) and its partners. These modules and classroom activities are designed to help educators teach and discuss chemistry and risk education in their classrooms. • The Global Bug Conspiracy
The Global Bug Conspiracy invites students to take a look at case files and rap sheets on potentially deadly microbes such as E. coli, giardia and shigella, and the bacteria that cause cholera and typhoid fever. The World Health Organization estimates that diseases associated with dirty water kills thousands of people every single day.

  • Water Germs Busted By Chlorine! (PDF)
Two mighty superheroes--The Chlorin8tor and Little Hector, The Disinfector--are the stars of a downloadable coloring and activity book created by the Chlorine Chemistry Division of the American Chemistry Council. Water Germs Busted by Chlorine! helps students understand the value and science of drinking water chlorination. In their first adventure The Chlorin8tor and Little Hector explore the biology of four common waterborne pathogens through the lens of a microscope. The duo introduce the germ-busting power of chlorine through The Chlorin8tor's trusty Electron Grabber tool. Students can color enlarged sketches of water germs and, on the same page, examine actual microphotographs of each germ.

  • Swimming Pool Germs Busted by Chlorine! (PDF)
The Chlorin8tor, armed with his Electron Grabber tool and trusty sidekick, Little Hector, The Disinfector, returns in a new adventure to battle harmful germs that invade pool water and make swimmers sick. While enjoying this activity, be sure to pay attention to the "Sense-Able" swimming check list and the "No-Fool Pool Rules".
  • Chlorine Compound Library
This article series profiled a unique chlorine-containing compound each month for over three years. Chemistry becomes fun through these short, colorful articles that combine basic chemistry with practical use information. The Chlorine Compound Library makes approximately 40 previously published articles accessible. Teachers and home-schooling parents may wish to take advantage of follow-up questions and science activities for students.

  • The House That Chlorine Built
Did you know that many of the household items you rely on every day are products of chlorine chemistry? Do you realize that vinyl (as in "vinyl siding"), an increasingly popular sustainable construction material, is a product of chlorine chemistry? You might be surprised to discover just how many indispensable products found in a typical home have their origins in chlorine chemistry.

  • Science Education for Public Understanding Resources
With support from the Chlorine Chemistry Division of the American Chemistry Council, the Science Education for Public Understanding Program (SEPUP) developed the Understanding Environmental Health Risks Module, which is designed to help students learn to think critically about the environment.

  • Project Learning Tree Resources
The Chlorine Chemistry Division of the American Chemistry Council is currently working with Project Learning Tree on a new risk assessment module that will be available in the Fall of 1998. The module will follow PLT's successful format and help students define risk and learn the skills necessary to make wise decisions.
