ARLINGTON, VA (December 18, 2008) – The American Chemistry Council (ACC) has released the following statement on the National Research Council of the National Academies’ “Phthalates and Cumulative Risk Assessment:  The Tasks Ahead.”  This can be attributed to Chris Bryant, Managing Director of the Chemical Products & Technology Division

The National Research Council’s (NRC) report provides useful information to the scientific community, including areas of potential research. The report provides a thoughtful assessment of the existing studies and illustrates how data rich the science on phthalates is. ACC, however, has some reservations about how to conduct the cumulative risk assessment on substances regardless of mechanism of action (MOA). Congress has asked the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to conduct a cumulative risk assessment on phthalates and there is a question as to whether a simultaneous U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) study would be redundant.  It is also unclear how this report would be reconciled with the recent NRC report on advancing risk assessment approaches used by the EPA.

The US chemistry industry continues to invest heavily in the application of improved technologies to ensure the safe production and use of essential chemical products. Today, people are living longer, safer and healthier lives through the essential benefits provided by the business of chemistry.
