Dubai Responsible Care Workshop a Success!

More than 85 participants representing 35 companies were in attendance at the Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association’s (GPCA) Responsible Care Workshop in Dubai on June 22 – 24. The workshop was GPCA’s first official gathering of Responsible Care Coordinators and others charged with implementing the initiative in companies located in the Persian Gulf region. The workshop focused on several key issues including: introduction to GPCA’s Responsible Care Program (which is still in development); the role of Responsible Care Coordinators; ACC’s Codes of Management Practices (which GPCA is planning to adopt and modify for local use); and Product Stewardship. The three-day workshop featured speakers from several ACC member companies who provided information on their company’s Product Stewardship activities. Speakers included: Guy Verbiest of Honeywell (Belgium operations); Raf Corneilson of ExxonMobil (Belgium); Sunil Shah of Dow (currently located in the Gulf region) and George Wellon of Methanex’s Dallas offices. ACC’s Patrick Atagi, on behalf of the World Chlorine Council, and Roland Yap of the Methanol Institute (Singapore office), each presented on their industry sector’s approach to Product Stewardship. Dan Roczniak and David Sandidge of ACC’s Responsible Care Department were also on the agenda. Many thanks to the companies which volunteered speakers in support of the GPCA Workshop! ACC Ex-pats Building Responsible Care in Saudi Arabia

There is life after your tenure at an ACC member company. Just follow in the footsteps of two Responsible Care pioneers who took their knowledge to Saudi International Petrochemical Company (Sipchem) and are now involved in the development of a company program and contributing to the region’s budding initiative. Al Biggs, formerly of ARCO Chemical and an early contributor to ACC’s original six Responsible Care Codes, and Chuck Wray, formerly of Celanese’s Deer Park facility, are currently based in Jubail, Saudi Arabia at Sipchem’s facility. Al and Chuck, both full-time employees, are working with local staff to build out the company’s Responsible Care program and recently hosted a two-day workshop for senior managers and site managers on the basics of Responsible Care. Both Al and Chuck joined Sipchem long before a regional Responsible Care program was proposed in the Gulf region, but their knowledge and expertise in both association-wide and company-specific Responsible Care activities is proving invaluable. Good luck to Al and Chuck!

RC14001® Trademark Update

For the past 18 months, ACC has been registering the mark “RC14001” in various countries around the world. This is being done to ensure that this mark remains the property of ACC. ACC was recently informed that “RC14001” was registered in Taiwan, South Korea and Israel. This is in addition to earlier registrations in Mexico and Indonesia. As part of its requirements for protecting the mark, ACC must demonstrate that it has been used in each of these countries during a 24-36 month period following its registration or it could forfeit the registration if another entity were seek to register it claiming non-use on behalf of ACC. We have a deadline of November 7, 2011 to make use of the mark in Mexico. “Use” could include a site achieving certification and then publicizing this fact (signs, posters, website listing, etc.). If you have a location in Mexico that is interested in RC14001 certification and want to conduct the audit before ACC’s registration deadline, or have a facility already certified in one of the other countries listed, please contact Dan Roczniak.

Monthly RCMS/RC14001 Monthly Implementation Focus Calls: Next Call Set for Thursday, August 5 at 11:00 AM EDT

Plan to join the next monthly RCMS/RC14001 focus call on Thursday, August 5 and share your experiences and/or learn what both ACC member and RC Partner companies are experiencing in their current audit efforts. In our most recent call, Partner company representatives Jay Grove / GATX Rail and George Peirce / Transport Service shared their thoughts, reflections and experiences from their recent re-certification efforts. In both cases, these companies were able to use the same ASP and field auditor as used in their first cycle efforts. This created some unique efficiencies for them as well as some significant differences in their field experiences. Join us for the next call and share your learnings and experiences in the interest of all participants. Contact either Dan Roczniak or Dave Gleason for further information at any time.
