Finance and Accounting: Controller & Managing Director

Position Summary:

The position is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the financial, accounting and budgeting activities of the American Chemistry Council (ACC), including budget preparation and implementation, accounting, cash management as well as contract management functions. The position is also responsible for ensuring compliance with all legal and regulatory reporting relationships. The position reports directly to the Chief Financial and Chief Administrative Officer (CAO/CFO).

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the conduct of ACC’s annual financial audit as well as implements and monitors internal control safeguards.
  • Oversees preparation of all relevant tax returns.
  • Supports human resources department in conduct of annual retirement savings plan audit.
  • Ensures compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and regulatory requirements.
  • Supports CFO/CAO in monitoring of investment portfolio performance and compliance with investment guidelines.
  • Develops appropriate tools and reports for purposes of providing critical financial and operational information to ACC staff and leadership.
  • Develops and implements applicable financial policies and procedures.
  • Directs and manages all aspects of ACC’s financial systems, including conducting periodic reviews and upgrades.
  • Reviews and executes all disbursements and contractual commitments of ACC funds.
  • Directs and manages all facets of the solicitation, collection, preparation, review and completion of ACC’s annual operational budget.
  • Oversees the day-to-day work activities of employees within the Finance and Accounting department, including establishing performance objectives, conducting performance reviews, and facilitating employee development for direct reports.
  • Develops and tracks departmental annual operational budget.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor’s degree in business related-field.
  • Certified Public Accountant designation.
  • 10 years’ experience in an accounting and/or finance role.
  • Five years not-for-profit or related experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills, as well as the ability to give internal and public presentations.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Ability to cultivate and manage high quality stakeholder relationships.
  • Ability to build consensus, work in a team environment, and coordinate across multiple groups within a large organization.
  • Ability to process complex, technical, abstract verbal and written information for purposes of establishing strategy, direction and action plans.
  • Expertise as a leader with demonstrated skills in leading, coaching and mentoring staff.


  • Master’s degree in business related-field.
  • Knowledge of the chemical or related industry.
