Communications: Senior Director, Product Communications

Position Summary:

The position is responsible for providing management, strategic communications support and acting as an “on-the-record” spokesperson for the group within the American Chemistry Council’s (ACC) Communications Divisions that supports self-funded groups that operate within ACC and focus on advocacy for specific chemicals or specialized sector issues. The position is responsible for developing and executing integrated strategies, including strategic communications planning, message development, and proactive and reactive media relations. The position works closely with the leadership of the self-funded chemical groups, Issue Communications Directors, as well as external consultants engaged by the self-funded chemical groups, as needed. The position reports directly to the Vice President, Communications.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervises strategy development for communications on all ACC self-funded groups through directing and managing the communications staff of the Product Communications work unit.
  • Collaborates with other Advocacy Communications employees for purposes of ensuring the alignment of individual chemical product groups and ACC messaging.
  • Ensures all messages to the media are factually correct, compelling, delivered in a timely manner, and focus on ACC’s strategic objectives.
  • Develops, fosters and maintains key media relationships, including positioning ACC as a “go-to” source for comments and background.
  • Assists in monitoring media (traditional and social media) and coordinating rapid response to inaccurate and negative information, as well as supporting proactive media outreach.
  • Responds to media inquiries, requests for information, as well as facilitates media interviews and story placement.
  • Staffs all related interviews with ACC spokespersons and crafts messages in advance for input.
  • Works with ACC self-funded groups to ensure the availability of appropriate materials, outreach tools and resources, including fact sheets, press releases, statements, and letters to the editor, social media, opinion research, advertising, and member-liaison efforts.
  • Develops messages and positioning on key issues in collaboration with key stakeholders.
  • Develops strategies and messages to reach multiple audiences, including value chain/customers, regulators, legislators or the public.
  • Assists in the development of the annual strategic Communications business plan.
  • Manages the overall work activities of employees within the Product Communications work unit, including establishing performance objectives, conducting performance reviews, and facilitating employee development.

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or related field.
  • 10 years' experience in public policy, issue advocacy, media relations or relevant field.
  • High-level account management, including team and budget oversight.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills, as well as the ability to give internal and public presentations.
  • Ability to process technical, abstract verbal and written information to establish beneficial messaging framework and implement action plans.
  • Knowledge of press/media/newswire services.
  • Expertise as a senior-level leader with demonstrated skills in leading, coaching and mentoring staff.
