Celebrating 20 Years of the ACC Code of Practice
2012 marked the 20th anniversary of the publication of the American Chemistry Council (ACC) Petroleum Additives Product Approval Code of Practice, an important milestone for the lubricant additives sector. For the past 20 years, the Code of Practice (COP) has helped raise the bar for testing and performance of engine lubricants. As ACC's Petroleum Additives Panel celebrates this achievement, its members extend their thanks to all the companies that demonstrated compliance with the COP and practitioners of the COP for their contributions to this endeavor.
The Petroleum Additives Panel established the Product Approval Protocol Task Group (PAPTG) in 1990 to address issues related to engine lubricants development and testing and to help ensure that high quality engine oil products are available to the automotive industry. They worked to develop consistent and reproducible engine testing procedures, cost-effective testing and an approval protocol to improve the assessment of lubricant performance. The culmination of these efforts was the publication of the first edition of the COP on March 31, 1992.
