Award presented at annual Responsible Care® Conference & Expo

(June 8, 2016) – The American Chemistry Council (ACC) recently honored two of its members, Ashland, Inc., and FMC Corporation, with its 2016 Responsible Care® Initiative of the Year Award, in recognition of both companies’ innovative programs demonstrating leadership in employee and facility process safety.

“Continuous improvement is the hallmark of Responsible Care, and both Ashland and FMC Corporation have embodied this commitment through the development of company-wide initiatives to enhance process safety culture,” said ACC President and CEO Cal Dooley. “These companies were selected for recognition by their peers and serve as a model to inspire other companies to even greater achievements.”

“Zero Incident Culture”

Many years ago, Ashland coined the term Zero Incident Culture (ZIC) to bring together the Responsible Care elements and themes of safe and responsible operations and reducing incidents.  Over the past years, Ashland undertook an initiative to refocus, revitalize and rebrand their Zero Incident Culture as the way it does business.

Today, the initiative includes the ZIC cornerstones of leadership, employee engagement, risk reduction, and performance measurement that are woven together to make the company more unified and stronger as it drives toward Zero Incidents.

“Ashland is honored to be recognized by ACC for our Zero Incident Culture,” said Keith Silverman, vice president of EHS, Quality and Regulatory Affairs at Ashland. “It is the pride in and commitment to our Zero Incident Culture that every employee within Ashland shows every day that made it possible for us to be recognized with this award. Our Zero Incident Culture is paying dividends in our company as we drive toward zero environmental, safety, and quality incidents.”

Process Hazard Level Screening Tool

In tandem with ACC’s recent updates to the Responsible Care Process Safety Code of Management Practices, FMC Corporation sought to identify creative new ways to manage process safety risks, to align with the Code’s management practice four: Understanding and Prioritization of Process Safety Risks.

The result is FMC’s new Process Hazard Level (PHL) Screening Tool, a new tool to identify, analyze and rank process safety hazards across the company globally. This scalable tool is making an impact on process safety at FMC and one that can be valuable for the larger chemical manufacturing community.

The Initiative of the Year is selected by attendees at the ACC’s annual Responsible Care Conference, who have an opportunity to review submissions and talk to company representatives on-site at the conference.

In addition to celebrating Responsible Care companies and their achievements, the Responsible Care Conference & Expo provided a forum for more than 300 industry leaders to learn from their peers and other experts in the field about best practices to expand environmental, health, safety and security (EHS&S) performance initiatives.
