WASHINGTON (Dec. 12, 2016) – The American Chemistry Council (ACC) issued the following statement in response to the Senate’s confirmation of Ann Begeman to a second term as a member of the Surface Transportation Board (STB):

“We congratulate Ann Begeman on being confirmed to the Surface Transportation Board and look forward to working with her to eliminate regulatory barriers to competitive freight rail service and streamline the Board’s overly bureaucratic procedures.

“Working with her fellow board members, Begeman has been instrumental in improving the Board’s transparency and accountability under the ‘Surface Transportation Board Reauthorization Act of 2015,’ which won unanimous support in Congress last year. Ann is a fair and thoughtful public servant, and ACC is pleased that she will continue in a leadership role in the new administration.

“During Begeman’s well-deserved second term, we encourage her to work with the rest of the Board to adopt free market reforms to allow competition between railroad companies, remove outdated regulatory protections, and create a workable rate review process. Improving how the STB operates will help support the continued financial success of the railroads and the manufacturers, farmers and energy producers that rely on freight rail to do business in the United States.”
