WASHINGTON (April 9, 2014) - The American Chemistry Council (ACC) issued the following statement regarding the confirmation of Deb Miller to the Surface Transportation Board (STB) by the U.S. Senate:

"We congratulate Deb Miller on her confirmation to the STB. We look forward to working with her and other members of the Board to increase access to competitive and efficient freight rail service for U.S. manufacturers and businesses.

"Her confirmation comes at a crucial time as the STB is currently reviewing proposed competitive switching reforms that could help bring more free-market forces into a freight rail system that is growing more costly for American manufacturers. As  recent research has shown, rates have soared more than 76 percent-nearly three times the rate of inflation-since 2001 following a period of significant consolidation in the rail industry. To further promote economic vitality for freight railroads and their customers, there is an urgent need for policymakers to adopt reforms that would streamline STB processes and increase market-based competition.

"Adopting competitive switching would be a productive first step. We are committed to working with Ms. Miller and the other members of the Board to adopt commonsense policies that will benefit shippers and railroads."
