WASHINGTON (October 2, 2014) - The American Chemistry Council (ACC) today welcomed the introduction of H.R. 5665 , the Clear the Air With Congress Act, by Congressman Randy Weber (R-Texas). The bill would promote transparent, collaborative and cost-effective national ambient air quality standards (NAAQS) for ozone under the Clean Air Act.

"We commend Congressman Weber for helping to ensure that achievability and economic impact are assessed before the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) may set a new ozone standard. The Agency plans to propose a new ozone NAAQS before the end of the year, and we urge the House to quickly approve H.R. 5665.

"ACC remains concerned that EPA intends to lower the ozone NAAQS without fully implementing the existing standard of 75 parts per billion. Most of the country would be unable to meet a dramatically lower standard, and new manufacturing investment in such 'nonattainment' areas would become more costly and complex. This includes $46 billion in shale-related chemical industry projects slated for Texas."
