WASHINGTON (June 24, 2020) – ACC today released the following statement regarding EPA’s New Approach Methods Work Plan:

"ACC supports EPA’s efforts to develop New Approach Methods (NAMs) and build scientific confidence in their use in risk-based decision making. The overall goals to generate data more efficiently on chemicals and minimize the need for animal testing are on target and consistent with the requirements of the 2016 amendments to TSCA and have been supported by ACC for years.

“This work plan is a road map to build the scientific tools and data needed to accelerate the use of NAMs. While significant progress has been made toward these goals, as noted in the work plan, rigorous research and analysis are needed to establish the degree of scientific confidence in NAMs required to support product safety determinations for specific regulatory purposes.

“Through ACC's Long-Range Research Initiative (LRI), ACC and its members are contributing to the development of NAMs and building confidence in them for risk-based decision making in product stewardship and regulatory uses. These activities include the development of in vitro to in vivo extrapolation methods and fit-for purpose computational and cell-based systems.”
