ARLINGTON, VA (January 28, 2010) - Last evening President Obama delivered his State of the Union Address.  Additional information is available on the White House website .

The American Chemistry Council (ACC) issued the following statement:

"We applaud President Obama's remarks highlighting the importance of U.S. investment in clean energy technology and innovation.  New and emerging energy efficiency technologies will be a key part of a smart national energy strategy that reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while growing American jobs. Chemistry is part of this solution""a "˜green jobs' industry whose products go into some of the most widely-used energy efficiency and renewable energy applications helping Americans save energy and reduce emissions, from solar panels and wind turbines to building insulation, lightweight vehicle parts and compact fluorescent light bulbs.

We also welcome the President's support for diversifying the nation's energy portfolio with expanded lower-emission sources and technologies such as nuclear power, advanced biofuels and carbon capture and storage, and his recognition of the need for expanded domestic energy development in the form of new offshore oil and natural gas production.

We support policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  American chemistry has improved energy efficiency by 28 percent since 1990, and our GHG emissions have fallen 16 percent in that time, exceeding Kyoto Protocol targets.  We can help create the clean energy economy of the future by continuing to innovate products that save fuel, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and bring advances in renewable energy such as solar and wind.

We look forward to working with lawmakers in their efforts to develop energy and climate policies that lead to environmental and economic improvement."
