WASHINGTON (February 9, 2016) - The American Chemistry Council (ACC) announced today that LyondellBasell CEO Bhavesh V. (Bob) Patel became the Council's newest board officer, effective January 1, 2016.

"A comprehensive and sound energy policy that promotes innovation, preserves global competitiveness, and drives economic growth remains of critical importance to the U.S. chemical industry," said ACC President and CEO Cal Dooley . "As CEO of LyondellBasell , Bob Patel represents one of the world's largest plastics, chemical and refining companies. His insight, experience and leadership will help to ensure ACC's continued success as we pursue affordable energy security."

Mr. Patel will first assume the role of Vice Chairman of the Board and chair of the Council's Board Finance, Audit and Membership Committee. He'll serve in this capacity for one year, followed by a one year term each as Chairman of the Executive Committee and Chairman of the Board. Mr. Patel was first elected to ACC's board of directors in 2015 during which time he served as a member of the Executive Committee.

Mr. Patel joined LyondellBasell in March 2010 as senior vice president, Olefins and Polyolefins - Americas, where he successfully restructured the business to take advantage of the shale gas expansion in the U.S. He was promoted to executive vice president of Olefins and Polyolefins - Europe, Asia and International in October 2013, and appointed CEO in January 2015. Previously, Mr. Patel worked for Chevron Corporation and its affiliates for more than 20 years. Patel is a board member of Junior Achievement of Southeast Texas and is a member of the external advisory council of the College of Engineering for The Ohio State University. He holds a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from The Ohio State University and an MBA from Temple University.

In 2014, LyondellBasell was named a Responsible Care® Company of the Year by ACC for the company's outstanding achievement in health, safety and environmental performance.
