The Titanium Dioxide Stewardship Council (TDSC) is composed of manufacturers of titanium dioxide (TiO2), and was formed to promote the safe use of TiO2 through research, product stewardship, advocacy, and outreach efforts within the framework of responsible chemical management.

TiO2 is a white solid inorganic substance that is thermally stable, non-flammable, poorly soluble, and not classified as hazardous according to the United Nations’ (UN) Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). TiO2 use is ubiquitous in our society. Most of the surfaces and items that are white in color contain TiO2. Thus we often find TiOcontaining materials in our homes, workplaces and public areas. It is used in a vast range of industrial and consumer goods, including in sunscreen, cosmetics, paint, plastics, paper and wallpaper, food, and more!

TiO2 is a global product with many important applications that has been shown to be safe in its intended uses over many decades.

WHAT IS TIO2?

Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) is a fine white powder. It is valued as a premium pigment for use in a wide range of products.

Common Uses

TiO2 is used in a vast range of industrial and consumer goods, including in sunscreen, cosmetics, paint, plastics, paper and wallpaper, food, and more! Common examples include:

  • UV Protection: Used in sunscreen in non-pigmentary form, TiO2 provides the UV filter which can help prevent sun burn.
  • Cosmetics: TiO2 is used in a wide range of cosmetics to give brightness to colors, help them cover the skin, and impart UV protection.
  • Paint: The most widely used pigment in all paint colors other than black is TiO2. It adds brightness to the colors we want in our homes and also reflects light to minimize the need for internal lighting.
  • Plastics: TiO2’s refractive properties, durability and brilliance of color can make it an ideal additive to plastics used outdoors, as it gives them a vital hardiness to withstand weathering and light damage.
  • Paper and Wallpaper: TiO2 is used in a broad range of paper applications where it can provide brightness, opacity and good printability.
  • Food: TiO2 is used in food products to help make them consistent in their color, opacity and texture. It is also used in food contact materials to help protect food, extend shelf life and reduce the amount of packaging material.

The Benefits of TiO2

Because of TiO2’s unique properties, there are many safe and beneficial characteristics of TiO2:

  • The Color White: As a pigment, TiO2 has excellent light-scattering properties and is used in a variety of applications that require white opacity and brightness.
  • UV Protection: It absorbs UV light. When TiO2 pigment is incorporated in a polymer, it can protect against fading, cracking, and weakening. Surface treating of the TiO2 can further improve this property.
  • Longevity: When used in a paint or coating system, TiO2 helps maintain the longevity of the paint and the continued protection of the painted surface.
  • Energy Savings: The brightness TiO2 can confer to light colored paints can, when compared to darker colors, reduce the energy needed to light the interiors of buildings. In exterior applications the coolness conferred by TiO2 colored surfaces can lead to considerable energy savings in warm and tropical area by light reflectance that can reduce the need for air-conditioning.

ABOUT US

The Titanium Dioxide Stewardship Council (TDSC) is composed of manufacturers of titanium dioxide (TiO2), and was formed to promote the safe use of TiO2 through research, product stewardship, advocacy, and outreach efforts within the framework of responsible chemical management, as well as to conduct the following activities, within or outside the United States:

  • Sponsor research to advance scientific understanding of health and environmental safety of TiO2;
  • Communicate findings of research and regulatory issues to industry, academia, government, and media; and
  • Advocate science-based public policy.

RESEARCH

TDSC sponsors research directed at understanding the health and environmental profile of TiO2. TDSC’s members have also sponsored extensive research in areas of mammalian toxicology, aquatic toxicity, environmental occurrence, fate and degradation, and pharmacokinetics.
