Dow’s Project Eztli is a shared‑value initiative in Mexico that leverages materials science innovation and community partnerships to help address period poverty, a critical social challenge affecting the health, education, and economic participation of women and girls.
Period poverty remains a widespread issue worldwide, affecting more than 500 million people who lack access to adequate menstrual hygiene products, education, or sanitation. In Mexico, the challenge is particularly severe. According to the United Nations (UN), four out of ten women and girls miss school or work during their menstrual cycle, and only 16% have accurate information about menstruation. These gaps reinforce stigma, limit opportunity, and negatively affect well‑being.
At the same time, reliance on disposable menstrual products creates a significant environmental burden. According to the UN, in Mexico alone, single‑use pads generate an estimated 39,600 metric tons of waste annually, much of which ends up in landfills or the environment.
Project Eztli helps address these challenges through a holistic approach that combines innovative materials, health education, and community engagement. The initiative has provided 80,000 reusable menstrual cups manufactured using Dow’s SILASTIC™ silicone, a durable and biocompatible material well suited for health and hygiene applications.
Distribution of the cups is complemented with medical consultations and educational workshops, along with culturally sensitive guidance to support proper use and long‑term adoption.
By tackling stigma, lack of information, and financial constraints together, Project Eztli helps ensure that the solution is not only available but trusted and used effectively.
The project is delivered through a multi‑stakeholder ecosystem that includes Mexfam, Fondo Unido México / United Way, Hulsi, Smurfit Westrock, along with Dow’s technology and employee volunteers. This collaborative model ensures that innovation is grounded in local needs and translated into scalable, trusted solutions that drive both social impact and long‑term sustainability outcomes.
