Fluorotechnology is vital to enabling modern life, but not all PFAS are the same

Fluorotechnology, some of which are considered PFAS, are a large and diverse family of chemistry that makes possible the products that power our lives — the cellphones, tablets, and telecommunications we use every day to connect with our friends and family; the aircraft that power the U.S. military; energy development that supports our way of life and controls costs; and medical devices that help keep us healthy.

These chemistries are vital to enabling our lives in the 21st century. However, not all PFAS are the same. Individual chemistries have differing properties, uses, as well as environmental and health profiles.  For example, fluoropolymers are one class of Fluorotechnology that meet criteria for identifying polymers of low concern to human health and the environment. Our member companies are employing practices and technologies to minimize environmental emissions every day and have invested significantly in research and development to help ensure new PFAS chemistries meet rigorous safety standards.

ACC supports a comprehensive, science-based approach to managing PFAS that is protective of human health and the environment. This includes advocating for policies that reflect the latest data, avoid unintended consequences, while also bolstering our economy and helping to make America the world’s manufacturing superpower.

States are rapidly enacting PFAS-related laws that affect Fluorotechnology, often with inconsistent approaches. ACC advocates for harmonized, science-based policies that protect public health while supporting innovation.  It is important to recognize that the vast majority of states have taken a focused approach to PFAS that recognizes the differences within this broad class of chemistry, addresses priority issues and protecting critical uses where new fluorochemsitry is used safely.
