Syensqo Helps Transform Battery Waste into Critical Resources

Syensqo proprietary reagent helps create circular battery value chain

As electric vehicles (EVs) and portable electronics become more common, growing volumes of end-of-life lithium-ion batteries are creating both a challenge and an opportunity. These batteries contain critical materials such as lithium, nickel and cobalt, which are essential inputs for next-generation mobility, clean energy and electronic applications. However, when not properly managed, spent batteries can contribute to environmental and safety risks, while valuable resources are lost.

Syensqo’s CYANEX® 936P is a proprietary reagent used by battery recycling companies in solvent extraction processes to recover lithium from end-of-life battery materials. CYANEX® 936P enables selective recovery and purification of battery-grade lithium hydroxide from spent lithium-ion batteries. By enabling efficient lithium recovery and reuse, CYANEX® 936P supports a more circular battery value chain and helps reduce reliance on newly mined raw materials.

Designed to work with multiple battery types on a single processing line, CYANEX® 936P improves recycling efficiency and operational flexibility. The reagent supports processing of both nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) and lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries, the most common EV chemistries. It can also help recyclers simplify operations by supporting recovery of metals from a range of spent battery feedstocks.

Pilot phase results have demonstrated strong performance across key sustainability and operational indicators, including:

  • Over 90% recovery of critical metals from spent batteries.
  • An estimated 80% lower emissions footprint compared to traditional mining operations.
  • Consistent production of high-quality, battery-grade lithium hydroxide.
  • Lower costs, with approximately30% lower capital expenditure and around 10% lower operating costs for lithium recovery units, enhancing scalability.

Additional benefits include reducing hazardous battery waste destined for landfill and supporting compliance with evolving battery circularity requirements.

Syensqo’s CYANEX® 936P reagent demonstrates how advanced chemistry can unlock circular value from complex waste streams. By helping turn end-of-life batteries into a reliable source of critical materials, CYANEX® 936P reduces environmental impact, strengthens supply resilience and supports the transition to a low-carbon energy future.
