The United States business of chemistry is a world leader, with $517 billion in shipments in 2021, and is the second-largest chemical producing nation, after China. Amidst disruption in global energy markets and rising costs for many goods and services, both domestically and abroad, American chemistry continues to contribute significantly to the U.S. economy. American chemistry provides more than half a million jobs, with average pay of more than $92,000 per year. Our industry supports a vast supply chain and creates economic activity in the communities where facilities are located. For every chemical manufacturing job, more than seven are created elsewhere in the economy.
