WASHINGTON (May 29, 2025) – The American Chemistry Council (ACC) is pleased to announce that its Long-Range Research Initiative (LRI) has engaged with the Health Effects Institute (HEI) to support and help grow HEI’s Summer Fellowship Program in 2025. The program provides support for rising juniors and seniors to explore research opportunities in environmental health sciences.
Now in its third year, the HEI Summer Fellowship Program provides qualified undergraduate students with the chance to engage in tailored environmental health research which they might not otherwise have access to. Each summer, fellows are matched with research mentors to pursue projects in various environmental health fields, including environmental exposure assessment, epidemiology, and public health. The program is full-time and provides each fellow with financial support during its 10-weeks.
Established in 1999, LRI is dedicated to advancing scientific understanding of chemicals, human health and the environment and promoting innovation in chemical safety assessments. By supporting the HEI Summer Fellowship Program, the LRI aims to contribute to the development of future environmental health science professionals.
"We are excited to support HEI's Summer Fellowship Program," said Dr. Richard Becker, ACC's Senior Director of Research. "Enhancing opportunities for undergraduates to gain hands on research experience – when otherwise they would not have a chance to – opens up the possibility of new career opportunities for the summer fellows and is an investment in the future of environmental health science and workforce development."
“HEI has long been committed to supporting and nurturing the next generation of investigators and researchers in environmental health sciences,” said HEI President and CEO Dr. Elena Craft. “This partnership with ACC will allow us to expand on these important opportunities and reach more students who might otherwise not be able to participate.”
