WASHINGTON (December 18, 2020) – The American Chemistry Council issued the following statement regarding President Trump signing the Save Our Seas 2.0 Act into law, which may be attributed to Joshua Baca, ACC’s vice president of plastics:

“The American Chemistry Council applauds the President’s signing the “Save Our Seas 2.0” Act into law, along with the continued leadership of Senators Sullivan and Whitehouse on this important issue. This bipartisan bill, which builds on the success of the Save Our Seas Act of 2018, will increase international collaboration to address plastic waste, help scientists and agencies research innovative ways to repurpose used plastics, including for infrastructure projects, such as roads and bridges, and provide resources to strengthen our domestic recycling infrastructure, an important step to reducing waste and advancing technologies.

Plastic makers are dedicated to progressing global solutions to end plastic waste in our environment and we look forward to continued bipartisan engagement in combating marine debris worldwide.

This bipartisan legislative approach represents a good model for progress. Although this legislation is an important step, more needs to be done to create a circular economy for plastic. ACC and our member companies have established a goal to reuse, recycle or recover all plastic packaging by 2040 and we have established a Roadmap to Reuse to accomplish that goal. In addition our recently released Guiding Principles include new policies and approaches we support to achieve these goals.”
